Climatic Conditions of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The islands of Andaman and Nicobar enjoy a beautiful climate for most of the year. It largely enjoys a moderate temperature for majority period of the year. Unlike most of the mainland of India which experience monsoons just once, the islands experience monsoon twice every year. The first time these islands experience monsoon is during the month of May and it continues right up to the middle of September. It again visits the island in November and continues to the mid of December. The great thing during the monsoons is that the water neither clogs in the islands nor does it cause any sort of traffic jams which is a common sight in mainland India.

Summer



The summer in the islands extends from March and continues to May. It is warm but not unbearable. It does remain pleasant due to the sea breeze which continuously keeps blowing in but the humidity level continues to remain around 80%. It is the most suitable season to visit these islands. The minimum temperature during summers hovers around 22 degree Celsius while the maximum temperature tends to reach the mid – thirties which makes it slightly warm.

Winter



The winters extend from December and continue to February. The islands do not get very chilly during winter and makes it a perfect time for sightseeing. A lot of people believe that the islands do not experience winter at all and this believe is largely because the islands do not experience conventional winters. The lowest temperature that is reached is 22 degree Celsius while the maximum temperature that it reaches is 30 degree Celsius. The islands experience a gust of wind all through the year except maybe for a few months here and there. From November to December, it experiences north – easterly storms and from the month of May to the month of October, these islands face the south – westerly gust. The only months in the entire year when the island remains calm and tranquil is during the months starting from January to April. It is recommended to visit the islands during these months and avoid them during the monsoons because the weather tends to get rough due to the storms which tend to come in. According to the weather information available, the islands stand to receive approximately 318 centimeters of rainfall and the temperature during this season drops between 22.5 degrees Celsius to 29.9 degrees Celsius.

Humidity

If we go by the information that is made available regarding the climate, humidity also is an important facet. The humidity that the islands face throughout the year is approximately 80%. The major reason behind such high humidity is due to the fact that the islands are located in the Bay of Bengal. This in turn ensures that these islands experience a high humidity as compared to the other islands located around India. The summers in these islands tend to get temperate but thankfully the breeze which keeps blowing in from the sea cools the island. This makes the period between March and May ideal to visit the islands. The winters in the islands do not get bitterly cold, it largely remains warm and humid. If you are the kind who enjoys chilly weather then visiting the Andaman and Nicobar during winters is not advisable. However the winter does make the island perfect for sightseeing.
